Back in my day there were only limited patterns and you had to learn to make costumes the hard way! |
Remember when the first steampunk pattern came out with Simplicity? Yeah every event or con you'd seen like ten versions of thte same exact pattern. It got weird really quick. Instead of experimenting or being creative you'd hear "well THIS is a Steampunk pattern". To this I say...what about Vogue? What about all the regular clothing patterns in Mccalls, Simplicity, Butterick and Folkwear. What about Truely Victorian, Green Pepper, or heaven forbid...drawing your own. For new sewers, and those of us who are kinda lazy, sure it's hardy to have all the "costume" patterns spoon fed to us, but keep in mind that just because a pattern isn't listed under cosplay or in costumes, doesn't mean that it isn't useful or what you're looking for in a project.
When I was first starting sewing this would have been a godsend, and I still do appreciate it now but in a way I am feeling my douchy hipster " we were into it before it was cool" oats.
TL;dr: this is a great resource but don't let it limit you. This site only covers Mccalls patterns and they honestly have a meh costume collection vs Butterick or Simplicity. Use it as a jumping off point and don't be butthurt when five other people at your event are wearing the same thing.
PS: if you want a good bodysuit pattern try Jalie Patterns which are all built for performance and 4 way stretch fabrics....and they're $12.99 vs Yaya's $21.99 pattern..and you won't have the same damn suit as every other cosplay chick out there either!
